CHAPTER 11/EUROPE

Scotland & UK

Mid-August 2026Upcoming

Scotland has more social enterprises per capita than anywhere else in the UK, and a storytelling tradition that stretches from the ancient Celtic bards to the Edinburgh Festival's spoken word stages. The ceilidh, where music, dance, and story weave together in community halls across the Highlands, is a living example of what the Empathy Ledger believes: that when people gather to share, something transformative happens. We'll connect with Glasgow's remarkable community development sector, Highland oral tradition keepers, and the growing movement of people using story to rebuild social fabric after years of austerity.

Reflections

A ceilidh in a village hall in the Highlands. Fiddle, accordion, stories between dances. A ninety-year-old woman grabbed my hand and said: "The music remembers what we forget." Sound familiar? Barry said the same thing about his tractors.
