CHAPTER 04/SOUTHERN AFRICA

South Africa

Early July 2026Upcoming

South Africa is where the world learned that stories can heal nations. From the Truth and Reconciliation Commission to the township storytellers keeping oral traditions alive, this country understands the power of narrative like few others. Ubuntu, "I am because we are," runs through everything here. We'll connect with community justice projects, oral history archives, and the extraordinary people keeping memory alive in a country that chose stories over silence.

Reflections

Ubuntu. I am because we are. You hear it everywhere here, but it is not a slogan. It is how people actually live. The woman at the market shared her lunch with a stranger and shrugged when I asked why.

Visited a community justice project in Cape Town today. They use storytelling circles instead of courts for some disputes. The elder said: "You cannot punish someone into belonging. You can only listen them back."
